At The Science Underground, we work with researchers to help bold ideas take root and pop into public awareness when the time is right. We connect emerging scientific research with communications networks to foster its growth, make it easy to grasp, and to ultimately benefit the entire community.
The Science Underground is founded by the former communications leads at the National Human Genome Research Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, where we shaped award-winning campaigns around recent major milestones in genomics, such as the release of the first (truly) complete human genome sequence and the first human pangenome reference. We take the intimidation out of science, from the most esoteric data stories to the squishiest critter discoveries. We're passionate about making emerging science stories culturally relevant, and impossible not to talk about at a time when science is under intense scrutiny.
Are you in a big research consortium without a communications specialist? Are you an academic with your first SBIR looking to craft a LinkedIn strategy? We are especially interested in continuing to help big team science collaborators and solo entrepreneurs connect meaningfully with their communities and audiences.

Our founders have a combined total of more than 30 years of federal, nonprofit and private science communications experience inside the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Federal Aviation Administration, the Society for Neuroscience and other highly respected scientific organizations.
We are an award-winning, trusted entity within the genomics and genetics community – the science we choose to share is peer-reviewed.
We excel at keeping up with culture and current trends to make science newsworthy, relevant, and something that can be spoken about outside of the field of science.
We tailor messaging to reach wider communities, especially those who have long been underrepresented in or excluded from science.
We offer tiered communications options that grow with our researchers. Services include communications strategies for a variety of audiences and prospective partners, social media content, national press coverage, digital media engagement, editorial placement, and more.
